Everyone travels by train at some point, but what do you really know about the railway? The book 'From Ape Head to Cross Tie' by author Simone Bijlard is a great visual and informative book about the Dutch railway for both beginner and advanced train enthusiasts. And do you know what's so fun? We helped Simone with videos, photos, text, and explanations about working on the railway. The page about new tracks provides a good explanation of how we at Swietelsky approach this and what is involved.
But the book offers more. For example, you read and learn about how steam locomotives get started and how today's trains operate. How does a train driver control a train? How do the thousands of signals, switches, crossings, bridges, and tunnels in our railway work? Can a train run on tracks that aren't laid yet? In the book, you will find answers to all these questions, and everything is made clear with detailed illustrations, cross-sections, and overviews. Anyone who isn't a train enthusiast yet will become one now!
The book is available (online) at the Railway Museum and through Dutch booksellers. If you still have questions after reading, or if you are so enthusiastic that you want to work on or near the railway, please do not hesitate to contact us!
