During the spring break, from February 26 to March 5, Swietelsky Rail will carry out maintenance work on the tracks in the Willemsspoortunnel between Rotterdam Central and Rotterdam South. We will renew part of the rails and replace the wooden sleepers.
In a tunnel, we face different challenges than in the open air. We have taken precautions to protect workers from dust and noise. For example, we wet the ballast and place filters on machines. All dust that is released must be removed. The normal ventilation of the tunnel is not sufficient for this. Therefore, we are using a whisper generator that is much more economical and causes less disturbance than the usual diesel generator.
This is the first time we are working with a conversion train in a tunnel. We are working with the RUS1000, a work train that lifts the track and replaces the sleepers. It lifts the track, renews the sleepers and rails, and places the track back.
In the summer (week 31), we will return for the second part of this renewal.
