The nine-week service interruption between Heerlen and Landgraaf has a spectacular start: on Saturday, March 5, and Sunday, March 6, the RUS1000S will be working on the tracks between the two locations. This work train, which combines track renewal and ballast cleaning, will be in the Netherlands for the first time. On Saturday, March 5, it will depart from Landgraaf station (departure around 2:00 PM) to the construction site on the Glas mij-weg in Heerlen (arrival estimated at 8:00 PM). On Sunday, March 6, the train will run from 8:00 AM (until around 2:00 PM) to Heerlen station. Those who want to see the work train can best do so on Saturday from the railway viaduct Streeperstraat in Landgraaf and on Sunday at the viewing spot of the work site on Spoordamstraat in Heerlen.
The RUS1000S is essentially a factory on wheels: the train cleans the ballast, lays new sleepers, and installs tracks. For this, the train has all the materials and tools on board. The train renews about 200 meters of track per hour and lays ten sleepers per minute.
