In 2021 and 2022, Swietelsky Rail Benelux delivered the track doubling between Heerlen and Landgraaf for ProRail. The project increased capacity on the line and enabled a second cross-border passenger service per hour to Germany. In addition to laying an extra track, we modified structures, stations and rail assets along the route.

Project scope: second track, viaducts and stations Heerlen–Landgraaf

In 2021 and 2022, ProRail—commissioned by the Province of Limburg—doubled the Heerlen–Landgraaf railway line. The track doubling enabled a second cross-border passenger service per hour to Germany, improving regional accessibility.

ProRail awarded Swietelsky Rail Benelux the contract to carry out the works. We not only built a second track and renewed sections of the existing track, but also modified several rail viaducts and delivered new civil structures. In addition, the level crossing at Glas mij-Weg was removed and the (former) De Kissel station was demolished. We also adapted the stabling yards (sidings) and platforms at Heerlen and Landgraaf stations.

Execution and planning

We carried out the work as much as possible from Monday to Friday between 07:00 and 19:00. Part of the work took place during track possessions (train-free periods), including several weekend possessions in 2021 and 2022. We completed the majority of the works during a nine-week line closure from 5 March to 7 May 2022. In autumn 2022, we carried out final (night-time) works; by the end of 2022, the track doubling was complete.

Increased rail capacity

The track doubling between Heerlen and Landgraaf increased capacity on the line and created scope for additional cross-border rail services to Germany.
