Signal relay room  Nijmegen Heyendaal

The 'Maaslijn' – the route between Roermond and Nijmegen – is being electrified. As a result, electric trains will soon replace diesel trains. This upgrade will make travel cleaner, quieter and more reliable.

To make this possible, we are constructing a number of new buildings along the line: a signal relay room at Nijmegen Heyendaal station and nine traction substations spread across the entire line.

What is a signal relay room ?

A signal relay room is a small building alongside the railway line, but it plays a vital role in ensuring your journey is safe. You could think of it as the ‘brain’ of a section of track. Inside are the systems that control the signals and points.

  • Signals tell the driver when to stop or carry on.
  • Points ensure that trains end up on the correct track.

Without signal relay rooms, trains would not be able to run safely and faults would occur more frequently. The building itself often goes unnoticed, but inside, everything is monitored to keep the railway safe and reliable.

At the new signal relay room near Nijmegen Heyendaal station, we are also ensuring that the exterior of the building is clad in greenery, so that it blends in beautifully with the surroundings and is barely noticeable. The signal box will be a building measuring 5 by 15 metres.
