The Wunderline is the rail connection between Groningen and Bremen (Germany). Several projects are underway to deliver a better service, with a reliable timetable, shorter travel times, and greater comfort. The improved rail link will make the train an attractive alternative to the car. The project on the Dutch side has been underway since 2020 and is divided into several phases and subcontracts.

In 2023 and 2024, Swietelsky, Hamer Infra and Gebroeders De Koning worked together on stabilising the rail embankment near Zuidbroek and Sappemeer in Groningen (Contract 2 of Phase 1). This phase is almost complete, and now—February 2025—we are about to start Contract 3 of Phase 1. In this phase, we will be working between Scheemda and Winschoten on maintaining and modifying the function of the Dutch section of the Wunderline.

Logistical challenge

During the 9-day possession in week 10/11 of 2025, we will carry out works related to maintaining the current function of the line. This includes preparations to the track structure on the bridge over the Winschoterdiep, replacing rails at the Lloydsweg level crossing, installing approximately 2 kilometres of rail pads (rubber pads between the rails and sleepers that reduce noise nuisance), relocating cables and pipelines, and improving drainage. As all of this has to be carried out from a single track, a tight schedule is required to ensure this logistical challenge is delivered successfully.

Works in week 33

During the 12-day possession in week 33/34, multiple disciplines will work on changing the function of the track. Upon completion of Contract 3 of Phase 1, the following upgrades will have been delivered and the Dutch section of the Wunderline will be ready:

  • Speed increase between Scheemda and Winschoten to 130 km/h (including the required signalling modifications).
  • Integrated speed increase on the station yards to 80 km/h.
  • Axle counters at the Scheemda and Winschoten yards.
  • Relocation of the pedestrian crossing at Winschoten station by a few metres, including active protection.
  • The track layout will be future-proofed to enable double tracking and tail track tracks.

Uncertainty regarding the German section of the Wunderline

While works on the Dutch side are progressing smoothly, delays appear to be occurring on the German section of the line. This is due to unforeseen setbacks, such as poor ground conditions and shortages of equipment. Up to and including January 2024, trains from Groningen were still able to run through to Weener. Since then, trains from Groningen heading towards Germany have not operated beyond the Dutch border town of Bad Nieuweschans. On some sections between the border and Weener, there is currently no track at all.

Overall planning

According to the current plan, rail services to Leer should become possible again later this year, reducing the journey time between Groningen and Bremen by 18 minutes. This would be the benefit of the first German construction phase. The new Friesenbrücke, a crucial part of the route, has already been installed, although track still needs to be laid on the bridge. Cyclists and pedestrians will likely be able to use the bridge as early as spring 2025. The second construction phase, which is intended to further reduce travel time to under 2 hours and 15 minutes, is scheduled for completion in 2030.
